Executive Summary
In July 2001 a summit was held in Dubbo which was an initiative of ATSIC by ‘Binaal Billa Region’. The key goal of the two day summit was to improve the wellbeing of the Dubbo Aboriginal Community.
As result the Dubbo Aboriginal Working Community Party was established and was nominated by the community as the representative body through which service providers can consult and communicate to the Dubbo Aboriginal community. From this the following issues were addressed; Law and Justice; Economic; Education; Housing & Accommodation; Cultural and Heritage; Health; Early Childcare and Family Violence.
The Dubbo Aboriginal Community Working Party seeks to provide a unified voice for Aboriginal people of Dubbo.
Principles
•Cultural Pride
Develop Pride in Aboriginal identity and history in the City of Dubbo.
•Respect
Building an understanding of differences. Mutual respect will be the basic expectation in community relationships; this means respect for all people., accepting difference and valuing what different cultures offer the larger community.
•Involvement
Involving the Aboriginal people in the community. Aboriginal people will have a voice and be heard In all areas of the community life.
•Fair Opportunity
Getting the youth started. Every Aboriginal persona and indeed, every person in Dubbo has a right to good health, good housing, education and employment.
•Say it as it is
Open the lines of communication by talking openly and honestly about the future.
